“Should we be on Google or Instagram?” It’s one of the first questions owners ask about advertising, and the honest answer is: it depends on how your customers buy.

The one question that decides it

Do your customers search for what you sell?

  • If yes, start with Google Ads. People typing “AC repair Dubai Marina” or “birthday cake delivery” already want something. Your ad appears at the moment of need.
  • If not yet, start with Meta ads (Instagram and Facebook). People don’t search for a product they’ve never heard of, but they will stop scrolling for one that looks great.

When Google Ads is the better start

  • Services people need at a specific moment: repairs, clinics, legal, removals, tutoring.
  • Products people compare before buying.
  • B2B services where buyers research on Google.
  • Local businesses where “near me” searches matter.

The strength of Google is intent: you pay to appear in front of people already looking. The cost per click can be higher, but the clicks are closer to a sale.

When Meta ads are the better start

  • Visual products: food, fashion, beauty, homeware, gaming.
  • New products or offers people don’t know to search for.
  • Events, launches and seasonal campaigns.
  • Brands that need to build an audience they can sell to again.

The strength of Meta is discovery and targeting: you can show the right creative to the right people, and retarget everyone who has engaged.

For example, Game Wagon rents gaming consoles city by city. People don’t often search “rent a PS5 in Kochi”, but a great ad for a weekend of gaming gets noticed. City-by-city Meta campaigns, backed by a booking platform and CRM, became one of the main drivers of their growth.

Before you spend on either

Whichever you choose, three things decide whether ads pay off:

  1. Where you send people. A landing page built for the offer converts far better than a generic homepage.
  2. How fast you follow up. Leads from ads go cold within minutes. If enquiries wait a day, fix that first.
  3. Tracking. Without conversion tracking, nobody can tell which ads work. Set it up before you launch.

How to test it properly

  • Pick one platform and one clear offer.
  • Set a testing budget big enough to get meaningful results in a few weeks.
  • Decide what cost per customer would make it worth continuing.
  • Test a few creative angles side by side.
  • Move budget weekly to what works, and pause the rest.

Once one platform is profitable, add the other. Retargeting on Meta the people who found you on Google is often where they work best together.

The short version

If people search for what you sell, start with Google. If they need to discover it, start with Meta. Either way, fix the landing page, the follow-up and the tracking first, and judge everything on cost per customer.

Quick answers

Is Google Ads or Meta ads cheaper?

Neither is cheaper in general. Google clicks often cost more, but the people clicking are already searching for what you sell. Meta can reach people more cheaply, but fewer are ready to buy. Compare the cost per customer, not the cost per click.

Can I run Meta and Google ads at the same time?

Yes, and many businesses eventually should. But starting with one, learning what works and then adding the second usually wastes less money.

What is a good return on ad spend?

It depends on your margins. A business with high margins can grow profitably at a lower return than one with thin margins. Work out the return you need to break even first, then aim above it.
