When someone nearby searches for “bakery near me” or “dentist in Business Bay”, the first results they see are usually Google’s map listings. Those listings come from Google Business Profile, and for many local businesses they bring in more calls and visits than the website does.

The good news: it’s free, and most of what makes a difference is simply doing the basics thoroughly. Here’s the checklist we use.

1. Claim and verify your profile

Search for your business on Google Maps. If a listing exists, claim it; if not, create one. Google will ask you to verify that you run the business, often by video or a code. Until you’re verified, many changes won’t show.

2. Choose the right primary category

This is the single most important setting. Pick the category that best describes what you are, not everything you do: “Bakery”, not “Food”. Add a few secondary categories only where they genuinely apply.

3. Get your name, address and phone exactly right

Use your real business name, without extra keywords. Make sure your address and phone number match your website, social profiles and any directories exactly. Inconsistent details confuse both Google and customers.

If you serve customers at their location and don’t have a shopfront, set a service area instead of showing your address.

4. Fill in every section

Opening hours, holiday hours, services or menu, products, attributes (such as parking, delivery or women-led), booking links and a clear description. Complete profiles tend to perform better, and they answer customers’ questions before they have to ask.

5. Add real photos, regularly

Your shopfront (so people recognise it), the inside, your products, your team at work. Real photos build trust far more than stock images. Add new ones every few weeks.

6. Earn genuine reviews, and reply to all of them

Ask happy customers for a review at the right moment, such as after a delivery or a visit, with a direct link. Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and quickly. Never buy reviews or offer rewards for them; it breaks Google’s rules and can get your profile suspended.

7. Use Posts and Q&A

Share offers, events and news through Posts. Add common questions and answers yourself, so customers find accurate information.

8. Make sure your website supports it

Your website should show the same name, address and phone number, load quickly on a phone, and have a page that clearly describes each service and the area you serve. This is where local SEO and a good website work together.

9. Watch what it brings in

Google shows how many people called, asked for directions or visited your website from your profile. Check it monthly and compare it with your enquiries.

The short version

Choose the right category, keep your details accurate everywhere, complete every section, add real photos, earn genuine reviews and keep your website consistent. Do those well and you’ll be ahead of most competitors.
